What is SMARC?

Low power, low cost, high-performance - for x86 and Arm®

SMARC (Smart Mobility ARChitecture) is a versatile, small form factor computer module standard for embedded applications.

The standard was created in 2013 by SGeT with support from Tria and other vendors. It was designed to support both the energy-saving Arm SoCs (System-on-Chip) and low-power industrial x86 processors.

SMARC modules are available in two compact sizes – 82mm x 50mm (roughly the size of a credit card) and 82mm x 80mm. The smaller is designed for maximum compactness and the larger offers additional space for high-performance components and cooling. Both connect via a robust 314-pin MXM3 connector, supporting high-speed signals including Gigabit Ethernet, PCIe and SATA. Automotive-certified versions are also available.

For OEMs, SMARC modules are ideal building blocks for portable and stationary embedded systems, from industrial automation and transportation to medical devices and IoT.

Because SMARC separates the processor, memory and core circuitry (the module) from your application-specific features (the carrier board), you benefit from faster time to market, easy scalability and straightforward upgrades.

SMARC V2.2 specification

The latest revision of the SMARC standard offers expanded interfaces and future-proofed connectivity. Including:

  • PCIe x4 (up from x3)
  • Up to 2x USB 3.0 and 6x USB 2.0
  • Dual independent LVDS channels (or eDP/DSI)
  • Dual Gigabit Ethernet
  • Independent HDA and I2S audio
  • Up to 4 UARTs
  • SPI and eSPI support
  • Reserved pins for future expansion
